VISION CORRECTION PROCEDURES PERFORMED

Although LASIK is one of the most advanced vision correction procedures available today, LASIK is still a surgical procedure.  As such, all potential patients must undergo extensive pre-operative evaluation in either our Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn office to determine if LASIK is an appropriate option. Furthermore, potential candidates must be well educated about the benefits and risks of the procedure and have realistic expectations about the potential outcome.  If Dr. Koster determines that LASIK is not the procedure that best suits your needs, there may be other procedures such as  Zyoptix Custom LASIK, PRK, Refractive Lens Exchange, or phakic implant surgery, that would be more appropriate for you.  Dr. Koster can discuss each of these options with you and give you a fair estimate of the results you could achieve with them.  You can begin the process of determine if you are a candidate by taking our Self Evaluation Test online.

The Best Candidates for LASIK are:
  • 18 years of age or older;
  • have a refractive error within the FDA-approved correctable range for LASIK
  • have stable vision for at least the last year;
  • have a healthy cornea, retina and eye pressure and no other major eye disease;
  • have a sufficiently thick cornea;
  • have no recent history of a herpes infection of the eye
  • have realistic expectations about the surgery’s outcomes and are willing to accept the potential risks, complications and side effects of the procedure;
  • if wearing contact lens, discontinue use at least 7 days prior to the examination, depending on the type of contact lenses.
Who Is A Candidate for Custom LASIK?

Even if you have been told you are not a candidate for LASIK, you may be a candidate for Zyoptix Custom LASIK. The Zyoptix Customized LASIK System is particularly appropriate for patients with naturally large pupils under dim light settings, patients with problems driving at night or who have pre-existing vision difficulties, or patients with pre-existing higher order aberrations (as identified during the patient’s pre-operative evaluation).  Aberrations are subtle refractive irregularities not fully correctable by conventional LASIK.  The Zyoptix treatment is also an option for patients with nearsightedness and/or astigmatism if their prescription is outside LASIK’s normal treatment range.  NY LASER GROUP’s standard pre-surgical LASIK evaluation assesses every patient to determine if  Zyoptix Custom LASIK would be an appropriate treatment.
